Time to celebrate
Date: March 10, 2004
Place: Old Trafford, England
Many English fans became aware of Jose Mourinho’s existence – especially Manchester United fans – before his appointment as a Chelsea manager.
Porto, who had finished 2nd in their group stage in the Champions League, set up a round of 16 clash against Manchester United. Sir Alex Ferguson, a proven master of his trade, came across the young & passionate Portuguese. Having beaten United in the first leg at home 2-1 they were trailing 0-1 away at Old Trafford (losing on away goals). United were the favorites.
Porto & Mourinho gave United a taste of Fergie’s own medicine – stoppage time goals. As Costinha bundled the ball home in the 90th minute from a rebound after United Goalkeeper Tim Howard had initially saved from Benny McCarthy’s free kick, Mourinho set off on a wild run down the Old Trafford touchline to celebrate towards the corner of the field where Porto fans were seated and Porto players were celebrating.
Mourinho later recounted this unforgettable moment in an advert for Sky HD box ad.

What happened later:
Mourinho took Porto the final where they beat Monaco 3-0 to win the Champions League 2004. Chelsea wasted no time to sign him. A contract was in place with Chelsea before the final as Mourinho later said that he knew it was his last match with Porto.
