The hilarious ‘Ten men went to mow’ Chelsea chant

Stamford Bridge - West Stand
Ten men went to mow‘ is a classic Chelsea chant. It is long & has 10 verses. When the opposition fans hear it start, they know what’s in store and it can certainly rile them up to a good extent.

The song/chant is originally a nursery rhyme.

One man went to mow,
Went to mow a meadow,
(aside) Meadow!,
One man and his dog,
(aside) Spot!,
Went to mow a meadow,

Two men went to mow,
Went to mow a meadow,
(aside) Meadow!
Two men, one man and his dog,
(aside) Spot!
Went to mow a meadow,

Three men went to mow,
Went to mow a meadow,
(aside) Meadow!
Three men, two men, one man and his dog,
(aside) Spot!
Went to mow a meadow,

Four men went to mow,
Went to mow a meadow,
(aside) Meadow!
Four men, three men, two men, one man and his dog,
(aside) Spot!
Went to mow a meadow,

Five men went to mow,
Went to mow a meadow,
(aside) Meadow!
Five men, four men, three men, two men, one man and his dog,
(aside) Spot!
Went to mow a meadow,

Six men went to mow,
Went to mow a meadow,
(aside) Meadow!
Six men, five men, four men, three men, two men, one man and his dog,
(aside) Spot!
Went to mow a meadow,

Seven men went to mow,
Went to mow a meadow,
(aside) Meadow!
Seven men, six men, five men, four men, three men,
two men, one man and his dog,
(aside) Spot!
Went to mow a meadow,

Eight men went to mow,
Went to mow a meadow,
(aside) Meadow!
Eight men, seven men, six men, five men, four men,
three men, two men, one man and his dog,
(aside) Spot!
Went to mow a meadow,

Nine men went to mow,
Went to mow a meadow,
(aside) Meadow!
Nine men, eight men, seven men, six men, five men,
four men, three men, two men, one man and his dog,
(aside) Spot!
Went to mow a meadow,

(everyone standing)
Ten men went to mow,
Went to mow a meadow,
(aside) Meadow!
Ten men, nine men, eight men, seven men, six men,
five men, four men, three men, two men, one man and his dog,
(aside) Spot!
Went to mow a meadow,

(arms extended: \0/)
Chelsea!

Chelsea!

In the song, there are bits of Carefree, Blue is the Colour, and We’ll Keep The Blue Flag Flying High thrown in there.

How did it originate:
There are no official sources but it is said it was started by Mick Greenway (who else?). It is understood that it was first sung on the way out to Sweden in 1981 for a pre-season tour. Mick Greenway had a Wally Whyton tape with him with some kids songs on it, ‘Ten men went to mow’ being one of them. The song dates back to atleast 1980 according to many supporters.
