Zigger Zagger Song

Zigger_Zagger

Not to be confused with the Zigger Zagger chant, on which this song is based

“Zigger Zagger” song was recorded in 2000 by The Shed Enders and Cuban-Jamaican ska musician Laurel Aitken. It was recorded for the 2000 FA Cup Final which Chelsea won 1-0. It was released as a single on the Cherry Red Records label that year.

The song is in a ska style and is based around the “Zigger Zagger” chant that was introduced by supporter Mickey Greenaway in the 1960s (Greenaway is mentioned in the song). The lyrics reminisce about terrace culture at Stamford Bridge in the 1970s and 80s, and namechecks Chelsea players from earlier eras such as Ron Harris, Peter Houseman, Pat Nevin and Doug Rougvie, and (at that time) contemporary players Gianfranco Zola and Gianluca Vialli.

Aitken is often referred to as the “Godfather of Ska”, and his music was popular among many Chelsea fans in the 1960s and 70s as ska music gained popularity in England beyond the West Indian community, particularly among mods and skinheads; youth cultures heavily associated with working class Londoners. Aitken had spent time in Brixton in the 1960s, and settled in Leicester in 1971. He died in 2005 following a heart attack.

Man blow your whistle, cos here I come
Yagga yagga

Kick off, kick off
Kick off, kick off
Kick off, kick off
Kick off, kick off

I don’t want no grief off of you
Only come to see the Blues
Pushing forward and reeling back
Feel the pressure of the attack

Kick off, kick off
Kick off, kick off
Kick off, kick off
Kick off, kick off

I remember Greenaway
Just like it was the other day
Every game home and away
Chelsea fans, here them sing

Zigger zagger, zigger zagger (Oi! Oi! Oi!)
Zigger zagger, zigger zagger (Oi! Oi! Oi!)
Zigger zagger, zigger zagger (Oi! Oi! Oi!)
Zigger zagger, zigger zagger (Oi! Oi! Oi!)

Kick off, kick off
Kick off, kick off
Kick off, kick off
Kick off, kick off

Chopper Harris, Peter Houseman
Pat Nevin and Alan Hudson
Micky Droy and Dougie Rougvie
Frankie Zola and Vialli

Kick off, kick off
Kick off, kick off
Kick off, kick off
Kick off, kick off

I don’t want no grief off of you
Only come to see the Blues
Pushing forward and reeling back
Feel the pressure of the attack

Zigger zagger, zigger zagger (Oi! Oi! Oi!)
Zigger zagger, zigger zagger (Oi! Oi! Oi!)
Zigger zagger, zigger zagger (Oi! Oi! Oi!)
