9 out of 11 first-team Chelsea players make Guardian’s top 100 players of 2014 list

Guardian has been compiling a list of top 100 players of 2014. The review panel includes 73 experts drawn from 28 nations with names such as Hernán Crespo, Gilberto Silva, Slaven Bilic and Dietmar Hamann. While these lists don’t matter much, but this is a further indication of how well a squad has Jose Mourinho built in just 3 transfer windows.

Player Rank in 2014 Rank in 2013
Diego Costa 12 35
Eden Hazard 16 84
Thibaut Courtois 17 47
Cesc Fabregas 36 29
Oscar 46 36
Nemanja Matic 48 New
Branislav Ivanovic 53 98
John Terry 69 New
Cesar Azpillicueta 90 New

Diego Costa and Eden Hazard occupy the highest ranks and were the obvious contenders to break in the top 10. Terry, Matic and Dave are the new additions to the list. Of Jose Mourinho’s preferred first-team, only Gary Cahill and Willian didn’t make it. Petr Cech paid the price for losing his spot to the Courtois. Andre Schurrle, who recently won the world cup with Germany and Filipe Luis, who helped Atletico to La Liga and Champions League final should also have a valid claim to make the list but not playing regularly for Chelsea this season might have gone against them.
